When communicating with colleagues, there is a difference. When I speak with the younger African American and Mexican ladies at work, we are lax. We use slang sometimes, and the topics of discussion are fashion, movies, and their plans for the weekend. I discuss current events, families, and recipes with the older white women at work. Our conversations are not as lax as those with the younger ladies and they are more formal. Then, there is the Israeli women that don’t fully understand English; we discuss mostly work-related issues and share in small talk. With them, I have to choose words wisely to ensure they understand what I am saying.
Do you know why the different cultures you come in contact with why these conversations are approached so differently? I ask because we have older employees at my center and I spent time trying to level the playing field of yes you are older than me but in this space we are equals with strengths and opportunities that we both bring to the table. I think communication was a factor in that because I approached these women in a more professional and understanding tone so that they understood that my experience was just as valuable.

I agree that depending on where and who we communicate with will determine how we communicate with these groups of people. I have had to recognize the difference in the way I communicate with the different age level of my colleagues.
